A wine weekend near Carcassonne need not be a race between tasting rooms. The pleasure of this part of the Aude is that vineyards, good food, old villages and open countryside sit close together, leaving room for a long lunch and a quiet evening as well.

From Leuc, you can make your plans as structured or spontaneous as you like. We are always happy to help you think through a route that suits your interests, whether you know your Carignan from your Cabernet Franc or simply enjoy a good glass with dinner.

Start with the wines of the Aude

The area around Carcassonne brings together several wine landscapes. Malepère, close to Leuc, is known for reds and rosés, while the wider Languedoc offers plenty of contrasts in grape varieties, soils and styles. Corbières lies to the east and south, and the cooler slopes of Cabardès are north of the city.

Rather than trying to cover them all in a single weekend, choose one direction for a day and allow time to linger. Many estates welcome visitors, but opening arrangements vary with the season and some visits need booking ahead. It is worth checking directly before setting off, particularly on Sundays and outside the busiest months.

A gentle two-day rhythm

For your first morning, a vineyard visit followed by lunch in a nearby village makes a relaxed start. Keep the afternoon light: a walk among the vines, a drive through the countryside or a return to Leuc with a bottle saved for later can be more enjoyable than fitting in another appointment.

On the second day, combine wine with the places that make this corner of France distinctive. The Cité de Carcassonne is best enjoyed with time to wander rather than a tight timetable. Alternatively, the Canal du Midi offers easy-going waterside scenery, while the smaller roads beyond Leuc are rewarding for photography, walking and stopping when a view catches your eye.

A few practical choices

If you are driving, decide in advance who will taste lightly and who will take the wheel. Taxis and organised outings may suit some visitors, though availability can be limited in rural areas, so advance planning helps. Bring a little space in your luggage too: buying directly from a producer is a lovely way to take part of the weekend home.

At Le Clos de Leuc, we offer a peaceful, personally hosted base for couples and other travellers who would like to explore at their own pace. Our local advice is there when useful, and Socks, our Guest Welcome Officer, may inspect your return with quiet professional interest.

If a few days of vineyards, village lanes and Carcassonne sounds like your sort of break, please check availability or contact us to talk through your plans.
